Grayscale printing is essentially an image printed with variations of grey colour shades varying from 1 to a million in some cases.

Difference between print as grayscale and black and white

The colour shades for grey are from black to white but are different from black and white printing itself. Now that I have mentioned black and white, we also have to mention the differences. Many people do get confused between black and white printing and grayscale printing. Here are some of the notable differences between the two:
• Black and white have only two colours involved. Only black ( which is the ink) and white colour, in most cases the paper colour. There are no other variations to this, only these two. Therefore, in other words, you can say that black and white only represents one pixel where it can be either black or white and nothing else. It is like binary numbers. It’s either 1 or 0 and nothing else. It can’t change.
• Grayscale printing, on the other hand, has many colours involved and coupled with so many different variations. As mentioned in the definition. The variations can be from one grey variation to a million grey variations. However, all of them range from black and white. So you get a situation where the printed image can bring out anything you want but as long as it falls on the spectrum of grey. Many pixels are involved so to say, and they bring out a good picture of the grey you want.
Now we have mentioned some of the differences noted between black and white printing and grayscale printing. The next question will hinge on how can I print these colours from my computer.

This is not a bad question because most of the computers out there have a way of complicating things by giving so many options. It is good of course, but it does confuse people in most cases.

Everyone heard of the AIDA model? So the AIDA model, if you haven’t, is A I D A. And advertising agencies across the world have been using it for years. So the ADIA model, stands for attention, interest, desire, action. Lots of attention, which is an attention grabber; an attention grabber should grab the attention of the reader or the viewer of the message. Then interest; create some interest, pique their interest on a problem they may have of your product, service, company, business, can solve. Then raise desire. And free is a great way to raise desire. The word free has been used, I’m sure you’ve seen it everywhere.

The whole internet is built on the world free. So raise desire. And then, a call to action. And a call to action, sometimes called a CTA, a call to action should be one call to action. If you’re doing hard marketing on the ground, it should be a telephone number or a text, you know, a text reply. You know, a call to action, the reason for having one telephone number for one text or one actual call to action is that, if you give 2 or 3, then your viewer or your reader will gets confused. And confusion means no action, so they won’t do anything; so one call to action. And I’m in the property business, the property world, and on one call to action. I want a phone call from the motivators and that’s the point of my marketing.

So these, I’ve done some earlier. Here you go, there’s one leaflets. This is an Industry standard leaflets and that follows the AIDA model: attention, interest, desire and action. So attention, ‘sell your house quick’, interests and desire, and then a call to action in big numbers across the bottom because that’s what we want the customer to do… or prospects, sorry, to do, not a customer yet. On these particular marketing leaflets, we use a landline number. And the reason we use a landline number is because it’s easy to remember. So on this one, the code is 01642, which is a Teesside number, and everyone in Teesside will know that 01642 is Teesside code. So they don’t have to remember the code, they just have to remember the last 3 or… sorry the last 6 numbers on the number. So even if they’ve that lost the leaflet or lost your message, they could still access or remember your number sometimes. Now, there’s no website on there. And the reason there’s no website on there is because that’s 2 calls to action. Again, creates a bit of confusion, confusion creates no action; so one call to action. Now the reason… and there’s another reason for that, it’s if you put a website on the message on hard marketing on the ground, quite often, people are scared to pick up the phone sometimes. So they will check you out online. So let’s say… I’m just going to go online now; I’ll do it live for you. So sell my house quick… sell my house quick, Teesside. So I’ve just to put in what people put in generally when they want to sell their house quick. I just put it into Google. I know you can’t see it on the screen but I’ll read it out for you; 1.9 million results back from Google. And, I mean, that’s incredible. Not all fast sale companies, they’re not all competitors obviously, that’s a lot of companies; but 1.9 million results. Even if you were a wizard on the internet, your website will get the lost in those 1.9 million. And the chances of getting top on the particular long tail keyword are fairly slim. So let’s type in another one, and be a little bit more specific; Middleborough. Sell my house too fast… so I sell my house quickly Middleborough, which is a long… called a tail keyword. Well, we’ve got slightly less; it’s 1.3 million results back. That’s a lot of results to get lost in. And of course they’re not all competitors, they’re not all fast sale… fast sale companies and they’re not all property investors after deals. But 1.3 million results is a lot to get lost in. So if you put on your hard marketing on the ground, if you’re hard marketing leaflets out here to motivated sellers and you put a website on there and the first instinct might be to go to the internet. And we don’t type in if it’s a website address; generally we type into Google. So this is QA property,

so let’s go QA properties; QA properties into Google. QA properties, 26 Million results back. And the reason for that is because we don’t generally type into the address bar the exact name of the company, generally research on Google. And if we search on Google, it doesn’t come up because it going… it’s bringing up the most relevant results to that one, which is not this. So having a website on there doesn’t actually work that well on hard marketing. And that doesn’t matter whether you are using… this one’s a different type of paper, this is an uglier leaflet but that doesn’t have a websites on it either. This one is a regular leaflet; I’ll go through these in another video. We don’t have a website on them because we get lost. So on hard marketing on the ground, I’d leave the websites off; one call to action at the bottom of the website. So follow the AIDA model, so attention, interest, desire and action. And by all means, have a few different templates to work with you so you can split-test which one works; so you can test, measure and adjust your results as you go, but leave the website of the leaflets.

Some facts:

Starting with some facts. If we look at the worldwide production of printing, we see that a lot of production, analog production, using screens is in Asia, in China, India, and a lot of countries outside of Europe. Perhaps some facts today, we have 40 billion square meters which is printed on. A lot still… another… a lot is still with using screens but in the future, digital will break through, so there is an opportunity for 40 million square meters in the future. Today, it’s only 1 or 2 %, but it’s growing anyway. 60% of all consumption is in Europe, China, Japan, and the USA. 60% of all production is in China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, of the conventional production. If we look like traditional printing and the main fibers that are used, we see that a lot of fibers are cotton fibers. This is because also in traditional printing, people are trying to use for the easiest way to print something. And the easiest way to print something is using a pigment and then afterwards just a heat treatment. The other fibers which are less presented, for example, a polyester fiber, is printed on with a dispersed dye. This is already a little bit more difficult to print, even conventional. And then we see a lot of fibers that are very… only have very small parts like silk, wool, nylon. This is because these fibers are different very difficult to print. You really need a lot of expertise and a lot of technique. Even using conventional printing to get higher resolution, it’s very extreme procedure, it’s a long procedure, you need a lot of water and you also produce also a lot of waste. So there, there is a large opportunity for digital at the moment.

DP Prognosis:

So if we make a prognosis for DP, we see that it will grow in the future and that it will double and perhaps it will completely be replaced… perhaps it will replace the conventional printing completely in the future. If we look at the markets of digital printing today, then we can in fact divide the markets into some conventional textile markets such as Apparel, Fashion, Soft Sign and then the Carpet, Tiles, and Rugs which are traditional textile markets, it’s there we want the penetration of the digital to be larger. And then we also have some new textile markets for digital printing such as Technical Textiles and Home Furnishing. So the largest challenge at this moment is to introduce digital printing for fashion. There, we really can get large turnovers if we introduce it in the right way.

Some Applications:

I will show you some application of digital printing today. So we have to think in concepts and not as before. If we look at the basic components, if we… sorry. If we look at the basic components of digital printing, there are 4 components which are quite important to get the right result. This is the hardware- meaning, the kind of printer that you will use to get the result. Is it the small printer or small, large format printer? Or is it really a high production speed printer?

Then very important is the type of software that you will use; which kind of RIP system will you use to transform the colors in the design to your textiles; so the recalculation of the colors. Here we approach, as textile people, colors in a different way than, for example, people from graphical sector. As textile people, we want to have some influence on the color. So the approach is slightly different from, for example, soft signage and conventional graphical sector.

And then of course, we have the choice of the inks themselves and then of course the textiles. So everything should really fit together to get the right quality and the right production in one time.


When we focus on the RIP and we’ll look at the color management and we look at what is on the market today, there are different RIP software systems. There are systems in which you cannot change yourself anything. So you buy a closed system, you buy a printer, you buy an ink and you also buy the RIP software. So in fact, you have very little influence of what you will do. What do you can print, if you were neighbor has been the same software under the same printer, he will be able to print on the same substrate, the same design. So there is no advantage in such a software. You really need a software in which so the software transforms of course, the colors from the design.


You really need to select a software in which you have the choice yourself of choosing your ink set. For example, I have some examples here. You can choose for high-speed and maximum production that you can use twice CMYK ink set. Or you can say, “I really want to be able to make certain specific colors,” and then you will use another set-up. Then you will choose a CMYK and you will select all colors which are different from the colors your neighbor will use. And this is the way to create really a large color gamut. So in this way, you can create more colors. So this is an example of a conventional CMYK and then and lodging the CMYK by using 6 colors so you really enlarge the colors which you can make. For example, if you want to make a very, very bright yellow and you don’t have bright yellow, you will never be able to print it. But in fashion, everything is about color, about attraction; so you really need a very vivid colors. So it’s very important to make the right selection before you start printing to set up the price right ink-set. And their software has to support it. If software doesn’t able you to choose your own colors, then you are quite a limited.

Textile & Pre treatment

And then of course, you have the textile and a textile substrate. And never forget to put the text out of substrate.

Where do we start?

We start conventionally. What does it mean? We first have to select our fiber type. For example, we choose for a silk or which was for a cotton fiber and then we have to pretreat it traditionally. What does it mean? It has to be very white before we start printing. It has to absorb the dye, otherwise we will not get a good equal quality print. So we really need the conventional pretreatment before we can start the digital printing. We also, for example, can choose for either a spin or a filament yarn. We can choose woven or knitted fabric or nonwoven. For a knitted fabric, for example, dimensional stability is very important. If we have something that moves during printing, our print will be deformed; it will not be nice. So we really need dimensional stability. So we have the conventional pretreatment and then we can start the next step.

Conventional Pretreatment

Within the conventional treatments, we also have, for example, some chemical treatments; desizing of the woven fabric example, bleaching, alkaline treatment for example of the cotton so that it can really absorb a lot of dye. So the conventional treatment should be in any way. And then for the digital printing, one step is added. For every fiber that is printed, we really need a specific treatment. So this is an extra step and then we have the direct printing digital printing step. And afterwards, we have to finish it in a conventional the way. So we really need this extra step. Why? Because otherwise the color will not want to stay with the fiber; we have to fix the color to the fiber. This is really important.

Influence of Pretreatment

So if we look, for example, at some water-based inks, we need the pretreatment. I will show you an overview. This is, for example, polyester fiber that is not pretreated and it starts bleeding very quickly with the direct dispersed dye printed. If we pretreat it, we see 2 things.  First of all, we have a lot less bleeding of the product; we have less a lot less bleeding of the ink. And the second thing that we see is that the color changes. So due to the pretreatment that we give, we also can enlarge and optimize the colors that we get. So we need a pretreatment for different things to have the right resolution on certain fibers, for example, polyester fibers, to also fix to dye to the fiber and then to optimize the color space that we will get with a certain ink set. This is, for example, an overview of a polyamide printed with acid dyes.  And due to the pretreatment, we have a larger color build up with the same ink set. So it’s really necessary to pretreat in the right way.

Inkjet inks versus Substrates

We also have to make a selection of the inks which are adequate for the substrate. If we look at an ink, then they’re there are different components in the ink. One of the first things is the carrier. If we talk about the carrier it means, “Is it a solvent ink? Is it an Eco solvent ink? A latex ink, a water-based ink?” If we want ink for fashion, we always choose a water-based ink. We cannot use a solvent ink, for example, for a fashion because it’s not good for the skin. We have VOCs coming out so we definitely have to choose for water-based inks, otherwise we will get into problems. Then we also have, for example, or a dye or a pigment in the ink. There is quite a difference. If you use a pigment in the ink, this means that you need a binder. So the binder will make the link between the fiber and between the color pigments. If you use a dye, the dye will enter the fiber and you will have to make a fixation of the dye. So it’s really a different approach. If you use a pigment, you always have a layer on the fabric. So this also means that the wash and fastness properties are less good than, for example, if you use a real dye. And then there are other things and inks such as humectants so that the ink wets the fiber well, etc. So this is just for the behavior of the ink and the ink to… but I will not go into detail for this.

So if we choose the ink, then I have an overview of some of the inks that are used on textiles. The first 3 inks are mainly used for graphical sector for sign, not for fashion applications. And then we have the waterborne inks. And within the waterborne inks, we then, again, have a large variety of possibilities. For example, acid inks, which are used for polyimide, for silk, for wool. We also have, for example, dispersed ink which can be used directly or which can be used by a transfer paper. We have reactive inks. Reactive inks are very good for, for example, cellulosic fibers or and then also for silk or for a polyimide. And then we have the pigments ink. The pigments normally can be used on all fibers. So we get the pigment ink, you can easily print on the polyester cotton, whereas if you have polyester cotton fiber and you want to use other inks, you have to choose twice an ink, which makes the complete procedure very difficult. So the pigment being ink is very interesting because in theory, you can print on all fibers. And then we have latex or veneer, for example. Here, I have more or less the same slides with some applications. For example, if we use a polyamide, we can use it in swimsuits. For example, the company, Van de Velde, will do this but I will go over it quite quickly.


So if we look at some trends, what are the trends? The trends are going to quicker reproduction. What does it mean? If possible, less specific pretreatment for digital printing and then also less after treatment; less after treatment means no steaming, no washing if possible. It’s ink dependent, it’s not always possible. So if we look today, more and more polyester is combined with, for example, elastin fiber. And an elastin fiber is a nasty fiber. You really have a lot of problems during printing. So it might be that fastness properties are lower. In a lot of cases, it’s also combined with microfiber. A microfiber is used for example, for sportswear because it’s very soft. It’s… if you look at a microfiber, I think I have here, the example with one kilogram, we can go around the world. So it’s really a very fine fiber. But you really need a lot of dye, a lot of ink to get a certain color depth. So this is a trend that is coming up in the future. Then so use of more microfibers and then also use of more polyester.

Post treatments of commercial waterborne DP-inks for DDP

If we look at after treatments, I will quickly go over it. But if you use reactive acids disperse, you see there is a lot of time, steaming, rinsing, washing off. So a lot of time, a lot of energy, ecological impact quite high. If you look at the pigments, it’s a lot better. It’s just heat fixation and you don’t need any after washing. So you have a specific pre treatment, you print with the pigment on all fiber combinations that you want to select and then you just have heat fixation. UV is also used in certain cases and it’s also very easy because you don’t have to after wash it neither. But for the pigments anyway, you also needed the pre treatment to get the right color build up. No pre treatment means that the colors are more dull, so it’s really important to introduce a specific pre treatment.

Hardware Printers & Print heads

If we go over to printers and hardware, then this is a little bit an overview of all possibilities. If we go into detail and look at what is used for textiles, then it’s mainly drop on demand techniques, piezo, and valve check techniques; piezo for everything that is flat and value-jet systems for, for example, polyimide carpets.

Development of Print heads

So in the development of the print head, what is the main development but we want to bring more ink on the substrate during firing of the nozzles? For example, wool fiber really needs a lot of ink to get a certain color depth. So this is the challenge to produce print heads that will be able to jet quite larger volumes during the jetting. If we look at the width of the printers, there is also a variety. For example, waterborne printers going from 1 meter 60 to 3 meter 20, which is corresponding with the market. And, for example, if you wanted something for her bedding, you really need something that is already quite wide. If it’s for clothing, 1 meter 60 will be sufficient. Solvent printers can work up to 5 meters. And then we also have some super large printers which can go up to 12 meters. So there is a lot of variety.

Hardware- DP Printers

Also in speed, there is a lot of variety. You can also either use a large format printer which really prints slow or you can go for high productions. So there are all kinds of possibilities. For example, if we look to 2003 or if we look to a smaller large format printer, it will take quite some time to print 30000 square meters. And if we look good today, we can do it within 2 hours. So there is a printer for everybody; for the ones that really want a large production and then also for the ones that they just want smaller high-quality creative production, everybody can make his own choice.


So I will end by giving some advices. These are quality, must be the first priority. It’s very easy to make waste production really. If you don’t have good pretreatment, if the after-treatment is not good, the production is not good. Never compromise on quality. Never underestimate your client or customer. They are really getting more demanding concerning fastness properties, concerning durability, concerning ecologically, and also concerning colors. If they have a certain color in mind, you don’t have to come up with a color that has a Delta-E of 2.5; it will be rejected, it’s not good anymore. Train your operators. That’s a key to success. If they know what will happen with the machine, they will be able to intervene when there is something going wrong. And then, try to have good communication between the designer and the one who should print. So if your designer is someone at home, a customer, explain what he should do to get the right color so that you can really print what he wants. So we want to print by the ER3 philosophy which means, Efficient, Ecological, Economical right, and then, ‘Right the first time’, ‘Right every time’, and ‘Right on time’. So digital technology really makes it possible to be very creative by your own, to make your own and niche market


How to decide – When to use Offset/ Litho or Digital Printing

Hi Readers. I had been asked a lot lately about high-end digital printing and how it is emerging into the printing industry today. At one time, digital printing was really good to quick print shops, in-plant print shops in offices. Well, in the mid-1990s, all of these changed with the advent of high volume print devices. Generally, those that printed over hundred pages per minute such as the Indigo, iGen, Zycon and Express.

So how does digital technology coexist with offset?


Well, during the mid-1990s for offset to compete, it needed to run several thousand impressions to match digital in cost. The advent of digital technology such as computer-to-plate systems, digital work flows, etcetera, has changed a landscape for offset to better compete with digital. However, digital work continue to make inroads due to its flexibility. Before I get into semantics, looking at offset and digital printing, let’s look at the advantages of each technology.

What are the offset/Litho advantages:

Okay, so what are the offset advantages? Well, very high image quality. It can print on a high range of substrates such as paper, plastic and film, etcetera. No qualification process is needed for substrates in most cases. The unit cost of a project goes down as the volume goes up. Depending upon the size of the press, can print large formats. Much faster printing process than digital. Much better reproducing Pantone or special colors. Can do varnishes and coatings inline.

What’s the digital advantages:

What’s the digital advantages? Short turnaround time. Flexibility, every print can either be the same, different or parts can be the same and other parts be different. Can do short run Variable Data Printing. Less waste due to minimal make-ready with more accurate counts. Cheaper for low volume printing than conventional printing. While image quality is less than that of offset, the differences today are small and depending upon the job in the high-end press used, may not be noticed by the client or their customers. Good color control top-to-bottom since you are printing inline and both at the same time, and there is no fountain ink balance like you have with offset. Can use, in most cases, any software from word-processors to high-end print software. In fact, digital loves PDFs. Can proof right on the digital press. Plus, the proof is extremely accurate.


Now let’s get a better look at the two printing technologies. There are a lot of high-end digital presses on the market. With some in this category being the HP Indigo Series, which uses a liquid toner. The Kodak Express, Xerox iGen, and Zycon Series presses. All of which use a dry toner.


To see which each technology fits in the printing market, I decided to price out a typical job using a local printer who prints sheet feed offset in digital. Keep in mind sheet feed is more to compete against digital where high speed web offset is not, since the web is designed for high volume constant speed. This, of course, is different when you talk about the converting market and transactional printing and inkjet web technology is a subject which I will cover in another digital episode.

It is clear that offset and digital technology both have a place in the printing industry today. To give you an idea of each technology in this comparison, the offset press being used is a six color med-format press and the digital press in HP Indigo 5500. The overall pricing can vary depending upon the area the country the digital and offset press is used.


How this prices out:

So, let’s see how this prices out. Okay, the job in question is an 8 page folded saddle-stitched soft covered printing 4/4 on a 70 pound text on such as , if I print a hundred copies, digital is by far the less expensive way to go. Look what happens when the amount reaches at 500 copy range. All of a sudden, offset starts to get less expensive. At a 2500 count level, offset is by far a less expensive way to go. You can see as the count rises, offset becomes less expensive. This, of course, is because digital printing today is still much slower than offset as well as using smaller sheet sizes.

Size of Printing:

While the average offset press size is in the range of 29 inches, it provides a larger sheet size. The high-end digital presses range more on an average in the 14 x 20 sheet size range. Now, with that being said, a printer might have another job. Let’s say, the client wants 648 copies of a 44 page booklet printed 4/4. The job calls for using a 50 pound stock for the text pages and a 65 pound cover stock for the car. Now, that quantity and the amount of pages, you would think it would be best to print the job offset. Not true. That’s the print digital in this case. Why? With digital, I can print all the color pages top and bottom at once without any extra set of cost as I would have to do for offset. It says digital is self-contained color wise. I’ll print for example 10 text signatures comprising four pages each and one for the cover. There would be no, virtually no make-readies between signatures as well.

Why digital?

Why digital? Why should I print this digital? Let’s find out. On the other side, if I was to print this job offset, I would have on a medium format press a total of 44 offset plate, printing 5 signatures for the text pages in a sheet wise configuration and it work in turn for the cover. This would amount to a total of 10 make-readies plus one for the cover. This high amount is because the job has to be turned and back printed to make up the 8 page signature. The process would also have to run 4 color process, which means setting up 4 units. The job would technically run far quicker than digital. But due to all plate changes and make-readies, the job would actually take much longer than digital to run overall.

Always check with your printer to see how they would like to print your job. You might be surprised. We know today that offset press runs are getting smaller and smaller. Instead of printing a hundred thousand copies, they may print 10,000 and come back later to print an additional amount, which saves them an inventory bulk material for use later as well as being able to change parts of a piece turn of reprint.


Today, the average run for sheetfed is around 5,000. For high-end digital, it is estimated that the average run is below 1,000. Keep in mind that these are just averages and apply only to the high-end digital market.


Okay. So where is digital going to fit in today’s changing markets? I believe it will be more in the personalized marketing area. Quick turn time or I need it now market. Short run jobs especially where there is not a lot of special colors needed. On demand books and photo books etcetera are naturals. Even though most digital presses have limited capabilities for true multi-spot color printing, some can do up to one, two or three spot colors. The nice thing about both technologies is that they can be combined. You can run a job offset for the static information and then take that and run the variable images on the offset portion digital.


Direct mailing, personalized marketing, for example, would be a prime example. Tickets, cars, etcetera would be another classic case. So what does this all mean? Let’s find out. So what does this mean? It means that digital printing can be the ultimate solution for some clients. But in my experience with computer to plate offset technology combined with the respectability of high quality stock and finishing, offset will yield a superior print quality. And will probably always be the trace for the runs over at least 1500. Of course, if you are looking for quick turnaround time in short runs and or variable imaging, then digital is your choice.


Keep in mind that two technologies can and always will work together, especially in a direct mail and marketing environment. It is clear to me that offset in digital will continue to co-exist but expressed on migration of digital printing technologies as maintenance and consumable costs go down, speeds and paper sizes go up. This begs the question of, will digital overtake offset? In my estimation, not now or in the near future. That case for now, geez, who knows?


Well, while both offer advantages and disadvantages, the two serve different, but sometimes the same markets, depending upon the job and the quantity to be printed. Each technology, whether it be offset or digital can do the job depending on what you’re looking for, and that’s the key. What are you looking for in your job? Short run, variable imaging, low volume? Digital is your choice. However, if you are looking at a high count job or a job with specialized paper on conventional printing such as offset, it is definitely your choice. You can always talk to your printer for advice.


For a printer, digital technology by the way offers them a chance to move their low volume jobs off their heavy metal presses, which frees them to put more higher volume jobs on. Well, I have a job I have to finish. It’s a direct mail piece, so part of it will be printed offset and the variable imaging part is going to be printed digital.
